The 2026 Online Student Burnout Report

A 512-student survey of US online college and graduate programs β€” burnout rates by program, the six leading causes, and the interventions students say actually help. Peer-reviewed methodology; raw data available on request.

TL;DR: 61% of US online college and graduate students meet the clinical threshold for academic burnout in 2026 β€” up from 48% in 2020. Nursing MSN/DNP students top the list at 78%. The three biggest drivers are balancing paid work with coursework (71%), weekly discussion-post fatigue (62%), and asynchronous group projects (58%). One-to-one tutoring is the single most-cited intervention (43%) that helped students recover.

    Key findings

    • 61% overall burnout rate β€” a 13-point rise from a comparable 2020 baseline.
    • Nursing MSN/DNP students lead the crisis at 78%. Capella FPX, Walden, Chamberlain, and WGU programs cluster together.
    • Working >25 hours/week while enrolled doubles burnout probability (OR = 2.1, p<.001).
    • Students who used weekly tutoring reported a 17-point lower burnout score vs matched peers who did not.
    • 77% of respondents said their institution offers "insufficient or no" mental-health support for online-only students.

    What actually helps

    1. Weekly one-to-one tutoring (43%) β€” cited most often as the single change that lowered burnout.
    2. Blocking 2 hours of protected study time per day (37%) β€” a structured schedule beat volume.
    3. Peer study groups on Discord or Zoom (31%) β€” even async cohorts benefit.
    4. Reducing work hours (24%) β€” often financially impossible, so this ranks lower.
    5. Institutional mental-health resources (11%) β€” most students found them insufficient.

    Methodology

Anonymous online survey of 512 US-based online college and graduate students conducted March–May 2026. Recruitment via university forums, subject-specific Reddit communities, and the Classfyx tutor network. Burnout measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) short form; participants scoring in the 75th percentile+ on emotional exhaustion and cynicism subscales were categorized as burned out. Comparison to 2020 baseline uses Salmela-Aro & Read (2017) SBI norms.
